Indy owned · Since 1995
A family-run salon built around independent stylists.
Sue Chappell Harmas opened Blades Hair Design in 1995. She had been behind the chair for years already and wanted a salon that worked the way she thought salons should: serious about the craft, relaxed about everything else, and close enough to home that you could still have a life.
Her son Jay and his wife Julia took over the day-to-day years later. Sue never left — she still takes clients in her own studio down the hall.
Blades was one of the first studio-concept salons in Indiana — there was never a commission floor. From the start, stylists worked as independent businesses in their own private studios. They set their hours, their pricing and their product lines. Blades gives them the room, the front door and the neighbors.
That change is the reason people stay. Stylists here are measured in decades, not seasons, and their clients follow them through every stage of life. The relationships outlast trends.
We’re still an Indy business on the north side, serving Indianapolis · Carmel · Fishers · Noblesville · Geist · Zionsville, and we still care more about doing good work for people we know than about being the biggest name in town.
“Great work doesn’t have to come at the expense of real life.”

Off the clock, Jay and Julia are Indy locals raising three little ones — and Sue is never far from the fun.

What clients say.
“Juli is awesome. She spends time to see what you like. I was one that just wanted to show up and get a haircut and usually waited too long. I have learned you can't do that here. I now have appointments every 5 weeks. The parking is easy, and they have cookies and coffee when you enter.”
Google review “Chris Vierling is THE BEST! She has been doing my hair for over 15 years, and I like to change my hairstyle frequently. From very short to long and layered, I always walk out of the salon happy with the result whether it's a cut, color or perm. She truly listens and cares about making her clients happy.”
Google review “Great location, competitive prices. Liza Barbieri is a wonderful stylist and makes great recommendations!”
Google review “Regina Daniel is the best hair cutter I know! I've been going to her for about 20 years.”
